Change, according to one of the definitions in the Macquarie Concise Dictionary, is “to make different; alter in condition, appearance, etc.” This is the definition which is most applicable to business, and in fact, life in general.
The trite answer to the question of where is the U in business is that it is between the BS.
Perhaps this is a more true statement then at first humorously thought. How many times have you heard the expression in your business or company “That’s Bull—t”
An anonymous quote states: “Procrastination is the grave in which opportunity is buried” Pretty sobering words. It’s like not opening the door when opportunity knocks. But is procrastination all that bad. Ellen DeGeneres is quoted as saying: “Procrastination isn’t the problem, it’s the solution. So procrastinate now, don’t put it off.”
How many times have you heard the expression that time is money. I wish I had a dollar for every time that I have heard it. Then I suppose time would be money.
The Macquarie Dictionary defines fail as “to come short or be wanting in action, detail, or result; disappoint or prove lacking in what is attempted, expected, desired, or approved.” Wow!! That leaves a lot of scope to become a failure doesn’t it? Is a mistake a failure?
Success means different things to different people. It can vary depending on work and personal life. It may mean that big promotion, the new house, the holiday home, lots of money, time spent with the family, growing a business, approval from a parent, setting a personal best time in a marathon, climbing a mountain, or even a sense of happiness or fulfilment. What ever success means for you, it is your’s and not someone else’s meaning. Unfortunately, many people live a life according to someone else’s definition of success. If this is the case for you, then it may well be a false definition of success and it would be useful and wise for you to review the authenticity of this definition.
Here is the truth. The fact is that there is no such thing as time management. You can manage projects, and tasks, and even money, but you can’t manage time. You can’t speed it up and you can’t slow it down. Time gives us 24 hours in each day…no more, no less. And guess what, nobody knows how much actual time in total we have to use.
A leader is defined as a guiding or directing head; a person or thing to follow.
In my work I have spent a lot of time with leaders, and you may be surprised to know that they are not all at the top of the pyramid. Many were in the senior executive position, however many were below that perceived exalted position. In fact, several of the people at the top of the pyramid were not leaders, but actually more effective managers. (Managers execute and do things right, leaders do the right thing and strategise.)
How many of you feel that you have balance in your life at the moment or I should say most of the time? Many, or indeed perhaps all, of you have heard the term Work/Life Balance. I would like to remove the phrase Work/Life Balance and replace it with the term Life Balance. After all, work is part of life just as is play.
Have you ever been to a buffet meal? Some people call it a smorgasbord. What ever you call it, it is a humungous assortment of food. An embarrassing amount of food, and wastage, in some people’s eyes…but that is a different topic. There are various selections to choose from as starters or appetisers, main courses, desserts or sweets. Some times beverages are included as well. Choices that can make the mind boggle. And the beauty of a buffet is that you do not have to eat or select the things that you don’t want or like. And even more satisfying is that you can go back for more of the food that you do want and like or enjoy. As a child at the buffet your parents may have selected food items for you. Perhaps to get you to try new things or maybe to keep you on a fixed diet of what they thought was good for you. But as you grew older you got to choose.
